About Hi-Fi® Oats

What are Hi-Fi® Oats?
Hi-Fi Oats have 40-50% more beta-glucan (the substance that makes soluble fiber) than other oat varieties. When you eat Hi-Fi Oats, you get more nutritional benefits in the same serving of oats. Hi-Fi Oats bring you more heart healthy benefits and make it easier to meet the USDA heart healthy claim:  “3 grams of soluble fiber daily from oatmeal, in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.” Research shows that oat beta-glucan can lower cholesterol levels, increase immune system function and lower blood sugars to pre-meal levels. 

Hi-Fi® Oat History
North Dakota State University (NDSU) scientists Doug Doehlert and Mike McMullen developed Hi-Fi out of a long love for higher fiber varieties.  They discovered years ago that certain varieties of oats contain naturally high levels of beta glucan, that little polymer that does so much to promote health. Through natural crosses, they developed a higher fiber variety. There is no GMO technology used in breeding Hi-Fi; it is a result of good old fashioned plant breeding, years of crosses and discerning selection. OGM is marketing Hi-Fi Oats to offer manufacturers the opportunity to use higher fiber oats in their products. 

Exclusive License
Ceres Organic and Organic Grain and Milling have collaborated with NDSU Research Foundation to bring Hi-Fi Oats to the marketplace.   Organic Grain and Milling has an exclusive license from the NDSU Research Foundation for organic production and marketing of Hi-Fi oats. This license means that Hi-Fi Organic Oats are available only through Organic Grain and Milling. OGM works closely with a group of select farmers to grow the oats and ensures that consumers are getting pure higher fiber oats. When you buy Hi-Fi Organic Oats, you are getting a healthier oat and supporting a value-added crop for farmers.   Oats face tough competition from other grains since they generally pay less than corn and wheat. Farmers who grow Hi-Fi get a premium for growing the higher fiber oats.

Hi-Fi® Organic Oat Availability
Hi-Fi Organic Oats are available through Ceres starting fall 2007. The oats mill and taste just like regular oats and are available with a range of specifications.
